Big Bookmaking

Last night we made a HUGE book (and snow ice cream*). Anne Callahan of Graphic Union Press realized that we need a LOG/JOURNAL for Trade School, so she taught the stab stitch technique while making a 2’ x 3’ book (comprised of pages each student brought) to give us! We brainstormed questions and prompts (“What did you learn?” “What did you forget?” “Haikus”) to add to our pages and made overleafs and cut-outs from big wallpaper samples and tracing paper. When the content was complete, we carefully stacked our pages together with front and covers, clamped everything together, drilled four sewing holes and took turns sewing the binding with jute and tapestry needles! Now we might be able to keep track of the amazing people that come here! *Courtesy of Emcee C.M., Master of None… nutmeg, sweet and condensed milk, and snow!

Anne answered my “why OurGoods” questions in the following way: “I’m interested in OurGoods bc I’m interested in helping along natural communities of makers and learners. How might it change the world? By creating a viable barter economy! Friendly instead of exploitative! Proximal instead of remote! Flexible not dictatorial! Lively! Unpredictable! Responsive! How could it fail? Maybe if the first wave of participants drop the ball and it loses momentum, or if the website doesn’t work.
